Hornets and Astros finish off the 2012 with a pretty good ball game.

This one was the KC Murphy show. The Hornet all-star first baseman was 3 for 4 with all 5 RBI. The first two left the yard at Ronan in the 1st inning for his 2nd home run of the year. In the 6th Inning his single cut the score to 4-3. And, in the bottom of the 7th, with the bases loaded and 1 out, his blast into the left center gap sent everybody home. Lest you think he was all offense, Murph recorded 15 putouts at 1B tonight.

Astro starter, Joey Ortiz was easily the second star of the game. After giving up the 2-run HR to Murphy in the first, he no-hit the Hornets for the next 4 innings, including having not one ball hit out of the infield.

Hornet reliever Chad Conroy escaped a tough situation in the 5th and did not give up a hit in his 2.2 innings of work for the win. He also did not allow a ball out of the infield.

Nick Young went the distance for the Hornets giving up only 2 earned runs. He struck out 8 and walked just 1.

Although they had trouble finding the plate, The Force did do a bit of their hitting on their own tonight, pounding out eleven hits. Frander Baez enjoyed a 4 for 4 evening. Johan Villalona had 3 hits including 2 doubles. And lead-off hitter E.J. Estrada homered in the 3rd to get the Force on the board.

Sean Callahan's 2-rbi single gave the Medford Maddogs a 3-2 lead in the 5th. In the bottom of the inning, Hornet starting pitcher Ed DeArias (5IP, 3ER, 7K, 2BB) led off with a single. Pinch-runner Ben Reedy stole second and scored the tying run when Eddie Connelly ripped a single down the left field line.

Hornet reliever Matt Conroy (2K) retired all six batters he faced in the 6th and 7th

In the bottom of the 7th Henry Spitzer worked a lead-off walk. Dave Clark bunted him over to second bringing up pitcher Matt Conroy who was intentionally walked to set up the double play. However Eddie Connelly also walked to load the bases. With an 1-2 count Alex Criscuolo was able to squib a slow roller toward the mound. The great speed and jump by Henry Spitzer running from third had a lot to do with the rushed throw from the pitcher, which was not abled to be handled by the catcher for the game winning run.

Other stats of note: Hornet batt

Savin Hill Hornets 0 0 0 1 0 3 0 4 8 1
South Boston Saints 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 3 8 4

Henry Spitzer launched a 3-run homer over the left field fence at Somerville's Trum Field to give the Hornets a 4-3 victory.

Lacking any of the usual starting pitching, Savin Hill relied on 2B Alex Criscuolo and CF Dave Clark to keep the game close. Nate Hodor pitched the final two innings, tight-rope walking to his second save of the season and the week. He walked 2 and another reach on an error, but didn't allow a hit.

Saint batters, Paul Larocque and Bryan Evans each had 2 hits a piece. For Savin Hill, Pat McClay and Henry Spitzer each collected 2 hits.

The Saints, however, winners of 5 of their last 7 before this one, may have let one get away. A base running mistake in the third, followed by missing a force play at the plate in the top of the forth cost South Boston a couple of runs. Leaving 10 men on base on top of that left the door open for Spitzer's heroics.

And he walked right through....

They all can't be pretty. Hornets come from behind to win an error filled walk-fest.

After saving a game the night before, Mike Isaia keeps the Hornets as close as his defense let's him for 4 innings. That was just enough time for the the bats to join the game. Savin Hill pounded out 10 hits over the final 3 innings.

Trailing by 3 runs entering both the 5th and 6th innings, Alex Criscuolo started both rallies with lead-off singles. Nate Hodor had the big bat on the night with 3 hits including 2 doubles, 3 rbi and 2 runs scored. Henry Spitzer continues his hot hitting with a big 2 rbi single. And Max Sterenson had 2 hits. The last ended up being a game-winning 2-rbi single, giving him 3 rbi on the night.

Matt Conroy goes 6 innings for the win. Good defense, timely hitting, and 5 (well, 4, but more on the 5th later) East Boston outs on the bases were the keys in this one.

Nate Hodor throws out 2 runners stealing and adds a run and an rbi. Pat McClay knocks in 2 runs. Henry Spitzer adds two hits and the game-winning rbi. KC murphy reached base 3 times including a double, a stolen base, and a run scored.

The biggest play of the night was in the top of the 6th when with 2 out and the tying run on third, the Knights had apparently tied the game with a single to right. However, Hornet right fielder, Freddi Carrera grabbed the one hop line drive and fired to first to get the force play and preserve the 4-3 lead. Mike Isaia came on in the 7th to close it out.

For East Boston, Anthony Ortiz, Wilson Mercado and Kenny Polanco all had two hits.

Too much action tonight to give a short description. You were either there or you miss a fun summer night of baseball.

Best play of the night (arguably, there were a lot of them)... After knocking home the go ahead run in the 6th, Freddi Carrera came flying around the bases on a hit by Nate Hodor, looking like a bullet train diving head first through Beacon catcher Kyle McKay's legs to score a much need insurance run. And needed is was, as in the bottom of the inning Drew Tambling hit a monster home run into the top of the right field trees at McConnell Park to cut the score to 9-8.

Everybody was involved in the Hornet's offense as 9 of different players scored runs. Multiple hits were recorded by Pat McClay (3, triple, 3 rbi), KC Murphy (2, run scored), Henry Spitzer (2, bb, triple, run scored, 3 rbi) and Alex Criscuolo (3, bb, run scored, 2 stolen bases).

After winning the first game of this twin bill the Knights sent Jared Kenny to the mound to face off against Dave Clarke.

The Knights led 12 to 5 in the 7th, but the Hornets were far from done. After the Knights plated 6 runs in the 7th the Hornets scored 6 runs of their own and had the bases loaded and the winning run on second with 2 out.

The Knights again trotted out Sean Hannon to try and save the day. With two out Dave Clarke hit a ball up the middle that seemed to have eyes. Anthony Ortiz and Geoff Harris somehow knocked it down behind 2nd base and Harris picked it up diving on the base saving the game and the series.

Kenny earned his first win of the season, Hannon picked up his 2nd save on the day and the Knights survive the scare sweeping the doubleheader.

Offensively for the Knights Ryan White got his first start and went 2-3 with a triple smoked to the right centerfield gap and 3 RBI.

The Knights traveled to King Field on Sunday to face off against the Savin Hill Hornets in game one of a doubleheader. Taking the mound for the Knights was Felipe Barahona. He would face off against Brain Rizzo on this hot and steamy afternoon.

The Hornets short of pitching kept this one close. Brian Rizzo a position player making his first start of the season for the Hornets impressed by throwing strikes. The Knights scored first taking a 1-0 lead in the first but the Hornets quickly stuck with one of their own in their half of the inning tying the score at 1. The Knights again would score but to the tune of three to take a lead they would never give back.

Barahona allowed only 1 earned run through 4 innings of work and that would be good enough for his first Yawkey League win ever. The Hornets made things interesting in the 7th scoring 2 runs and forcing the Knights to trot out Sean Hannon for his first ever save. Offensively

The neighborhood rival Savin Hill Hornets and McKay Club Beacons locked heads for another pitcher’s duel at McConnell in just three short days. The Beacons prevailed by the same score as Sunday 2-1. Different tossers were on the bump for each team of course. Eric MacIver (0-1) got the call for the Hornets. Eric pitched 6 innings; allowed 2 runs on 5 base hits. He pitched well enough to get a victory. Kevin Loveless got his first start of 2012 for the beacons. Kevin tossed 7 innings. He allowed a solo run in the 3rd on 6 base hits. He K'd 4 and walked 4.

The Beacons were led by Captain Jack Owens. Jackie was put in the lead off slot and he led the game with a solid single. Nothing has come easy for Tom Fitzpatrick & the McKay Club in 2012. They have to EARN every win in this “dog fight” of a season. Savin Hill does not have a very good record --- BUT – they have a good team. This sunny day at McConnell Park brought two young aces against each other in a tremendous 7 inning battle. Michael Isaia was perfect on the season with a 2-0 record. Fitzy celebrated his first win last Sunday over Al Thomas. His mates only produced 2 runs as they did against the A’s last week. But, that was enough for a Beacon 2-1 win.

Isaia pitched 4 no hit innings and was a victim of an unearned run in the 3rd.

Brian Mylett was hit by a pitch in that 3rd stanza then stole 2nd base. Ryan Carrier reached in an error. RBI machine (7) Dylan Perez reached on a fielder’s choice to plate Mylette.
The Beacons would get their 2 hits in the 6th. Perez singled with one out stole 2nd then came home on a smash up the middle

Only thing this one missed was the large number of female fans Savin Hill had in the stands at Saturdays game....a great YBL game at McConnell that had a playoff type feel. Minutemen get the lead, a few times, but Hornets always came back.

Tie game late, Carrera guns down the would be go ahead run at the plate. Next inning, Christman's broken bat single puts Brighton up. Hornets tie it in the bottom half but Minutemen's right fielder answers, Levensaler throws out would be go ahead run at the dish.

Brighton plates 2 in 7th and almost a 3rd run.....close play at the plate, Mori tagged out by a diving Hodor who had recovered a wild throw from the backstop.

For Minmen, Kevin Zylka pitches well and Sam Hyun gets the win. Barthel remains hot going 2-3 with a missile double.

He might have had his 4th double of the game but Mike Isaia, the Savin Hill starter whom he had hit his previous 3 doubles off of was now the left fielder and knew exactly where to stand when he blasted a 350ft fly ball for the first out of the 7th inning.

It was a game of waves. Stoneham took advantage of a couple of 1st inning errors to jump to a 2-0 lead and added another run in the 3rd. It looked like that was enough as starting pitcher Justin Dietz was mowing Hornet batters down, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 throughout the first 4 innings. However, in the 5th, a lead-off error and a walk gave Savin Hill some life.

In an attempt to snuff out that life Stoneham turn to their ace, Sam Cummings. After a inducing a strikeout and a soft liner to shorta wild pitch increased the stakes by moving both runners up, then Freddi Carrera lined a two-run single to right-center. On the next pitch Nate Hodor rocketed a double to score Carrera and just like that the game was tied.

In the top of the 7th, the Sabers had plated one run already and were threatening for more with runners on 2nd and 3rd and nobody out when the biggest wave of the night hit.

Rain! Lots!
