The Thunder jumped out to an early 5 run lead in the second inning of game 1. DH Bill Smith (2 for 3) led off with a double, advanced to third on LF Mike Rose's fly to right, SS Jim Beers walked, and after a groundout by DH Jon Story, 6 straight singles by DH/3B Todd Thompson, 1B Dave Brown, C Mike Johnson, 3B Gregg Bromley, CF Brian Chen and 2B Mike Rullo knocked all the runs home. They got 3 more in the third on hits by Paul Laurin, Bill Smith again, a walk to Rose, a SAC fly by Beers, and another single by Brown. Two more insurance runs came in the 8th on a single by Rose, a double by Story, and singles by Thompson and Johnson. Newton banged around starter Paul Laurin in the third, scoring 5 times on a walk, hit batter, a double by LF Dave Michael, and singles by 2B Mark Fitzgerald, P Rob Goldfarb, and C Dan Phelan. But Laurin settled down the rest of the way, holding the Giants to just one more run that scored on a wild pit

The Thunder jumped out to an 11-0 lead after 2 innings and held on through a shaky 6th inning to win 11-5. Dave Patnaude, recently returned from the injured list, pitched a strong 4 scoreless innings to start the game including a great pickoff to 1B Bill Smith in the first inning. The Thunder attack was led by Brian Chen and P Jon Story with 3 hits each (Story with 2 doubles knocking in runs 2 and 3 in the game), and Dave Brown and Gregg Bromley with 2 hits each. Mike Rose reached 3 times on a walk, hit batter and single. Todd Thompson turned in a tremendous play at third to take away an extra base hit on a line drive up and to his left. Jim Beers, catching in game 2, made a great play on a popup to kill a Newton rally in the 4th. Newton put together a good 4th inning rally on successive hits by Dan Phelan and Ed Scala. Phelan had 2 hits to lead Newton.

Key hits in the seventh by Mike Robertson and Sean Ward provided the tying and winning runs. Cary Atsalis relieved Jeff Mullin and picked up his first win.
