2nd inning Natick has runners on 1st & 3rd. A one hopper in the hole at short for the double play and Natick would not score. Later, Doug Flutie doubles to lead off and on a base hit to right field, Dana Levensaler to Dan Pill to Bill Gross at the plate who tags Flutie out. Same inning w runners on the corners, Mike Barthel steps off and fakes to 3rd and the runner off 1st gets in a pickle. Waltham throws the runner from 3rd out at the plate. Ugly moment was when a Blaine fastball glances off Derek Luccini's helmet visor and hits him in the face. He suffered a broken nose. The same inning Blaine gets wild, to go along with the hit batter, he walked four and the Sox get 2 runs. Barthel throws 5 scoreless innings but Natick gets 2 in the sixth and seventh. Jay Wisner comes in with 2 runners on. The Wiz gets 2 strikeouts to get out of it. The Sox hold on for the 6-4 win.

A great battle in game 1 of this years finals.

Red Sox get 2 in the top of the first and would then be baffled by Caccavelli, never seeming to get the 2 out hit when they needed it.

However, for Waltham, Dan Pill was just as great allowing 2 runs on just 3 hits in a 10 inning complete game gem. Pill thought he was out of gas much earlier but still manage to get outs.

Tied in the top of 10, Pete Fricker singled for the 5th time in this game (5-5, 2R) and Natick turns to Blaine in relief. Spadafino singles, and Levensaler makes a "loud out" to left. Mike "Big Game" Barthel, while battling a stomach virus that wouldn't allow him to pitch in the game, would come to the plate and do it again, as he did in the morning game against East Boston. A double to right center for 2 RBI and he came around to score on 2 wild pitches.

Game 2 Tuesday night at Nipper in Waltham, 7pm start

Boston Bombers x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x 5 12 0

After the lights in Chelsea go out in the 9th last Thursday, this game was continued at Natick high school on Sunday morning.
After some debate about who was hitting and when, East Boston gets 2 in the bottom of the 9th to tie it and the game would remain that way until the top of the 15th.
Waltham loads the bases with no outs and Mike Barthel would double to clear the bases and later score on an RBI ground out by Bill Gross.
Barthel and Spadafino had 3 hits each and Derek Luccini homered earlier in the game (Thursday at Chelsea)
Jay Wisner pitched 8.2 innings in relief with 12 K's and gets the win.
Hats off to East Boston for a good year. A great effort to tie the game in the 9th and take Waltham the distance.

Waltham Red Sox 2 0 3 0 2 1 0 3 x 11 15 3

After being dominated in game 2 by Malden and Tom Manning, Waltham's offense and intensity showed up in the rubber match of a series between 2 good ball clubs.
The Sox put up 11 runs on 15 hits with Mike Barthel leading the way going 3-5, while Brian Spadafino, Jon Churchill, Bill Gross and Dan Pill all had 2 hits each. Derek Luccini and Dan Pill had 3 RBI each while Spadafino and Dana Levensaler added 2 steals each.
Storm came within 1 when they got 3 in the seventh. With the tying run on first, Mike Barthel dives to stab a liner up the first base line and tags the bag for the inning ending double play. The Sox then get 3 in the eighth to put it away.

Waltham advance to the semi-finals as they have done every year (4 in a row) since coming into the league.
