The Astros struck first with 1 run in the top of the first but the Cubs quickly answered in the bottom half of the first with 4 runs highlighted by back to back 2 out extra base hits by Mike Bristol (1-2, 2B, BB, 2RBI, 1R, 1SB) and John Gillis (1-3, 3B, 2RBI). Four runs were more than enough for the Cubs as Bristol held the Astros scoreless for the remainder of the game. Bristol pitched well allowing only 1R(0ER) on 5H, 1BB, and 7K over 6 innings.

The Astros took an early 3-0 lead scoring 2 in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd. But in the bottom of the 3rd, the Yanks came back with 4 runs highlighted by a bases loaded 2 run single by Jeff Coveney (1-3, 2 RBI) and an RBI single by Mike Moloney (1-3, RBI). Brandon Long knocked in an insurance run in the 6th inning to give the Yanks a 5-3 lead. On the Hill, Ken Kilduff struck out 10 to improve to 7-1. Kilduff allowed 3 runs (1ER) on 5 hits over 7 innings. Pelletier pitched well for the Astros in the complete game loss. AJ Bucciarelli also had 2 hits on the night.

Anthony Leonelli, the Marlins first round draft pick in 2004, tossed the first complete game shutout in Marlins history as the Fish edged a tough Astros team 3-0 at Clifford Field. Leonelli (CG, 5H, 0BB, 9K) was matched pitch for pitch by Sean Kennedy of the Astros (5IP, 4H, 8K) through 5 innings before the Astros went to the bullpen in the bottom of the 6th. Reliever Ron Viola walked Andy Herr (0-1, R, HBP, BB) and Matt King (2-2, R, BB) to open the frame before they were advanced by a sacrifice bunt by Karl Cyr. Joe Montoya (1-3, R, 3B, 2RBI) then provided the big blow of the inning, lining a deep triple to left scoring Herr and King. Montoya then scored on a single by Jason Leone. Viola had two hits for the Astros including a double, and Tyler Walsh had a single and stolen base.

Brian Houlding held the Astros to 4 hits in his complete game effort, while Gary DiPerna took the loss. Houlding set White Sox history twice. First, his 11th career win tied him for 1st place all time on the Sox list with Chris Walsh. Second, he recorded his 100th career strikeout when he K'd out Rich Newman in the 6th inning. The Sox offense was led by a 3 for 3 performance by Kyle Michaud and capped by a pinch-hit, 2-run homerun by Eamonn McDonough. Dan Field and Joe Fitzgerald also had multihit games for the Sox. The Astros lone run scored when Dave Kwajewski walked and later scored on a Tyler Walsh sacrifice fly.

SK tossed a CG on two days rest. Kennedy struck out nine Athletics to give the Astros the one-run win. The 'stros played errorless defense and plated all three of their runs in the fourth. With men on 1st and 3rd, Dave Kwajewski executed a perfect hit and run to drive in Ron Viola. Then with two outs, Tyler Walsh delivered a single up the middle that scored Rich Newman (2-for-3) and Kwajewski. The 'stros never gave up the lead. Santi Mazzeo brought it within one in the fifth by homering with Pedro Gil on base, but Kennedy clamped down and got stronger. After the home run he did not allow a baserunner. Rob Sherman took the loss pitching well through seven innings. He struck out 12 and walked none. Gil had three hits and a SB for the A's. Neither shortstop recorded a chance in the field.

How do we not have Kennedy's picture? Kwajewski and Walsh were the RBI men.

What more can be said about All Star Jeff James? The Cards needed his arm on All Star eve and he puts team first and threw a complete game 4 hit shutout, walking none and striking out 10. It was a pitcher's duel between James and the battery of Mike Pelletier and Matt Abbott as both teams' pitchers threw up bagels until the 6th when the Cards touched Abbott for 3 runs on a Chris Caprio sac fly and error and an RBI single by Vincent Paquette. Offensively, the Cards were led once again by Vincent Paquette (2-3, 2B, 1RBI), whose double was hit so hard that the ball had hair on it!

Kosc and Spoth backed up Kurtz's strong pitching.

Ron Viola allowed only three hits in six innings and Mike Vernon earned his second save in as many tries. Viola walked only two while striking out eight in his second win of the season. The big hit came off the bat of Shu Sasaki who drove in two with a single in the second. Dave Kwajewski (2R, RBI) and Rich Newman also drove in a run each. In the fifth, Tony Ricupero extended his season-long hitting streak to 12 games. For the Royals, Andy Marenghi went the distance and pitched well. In the fourth, Jason Cordova homered with a man on to drive in the Royals runs.
