Tim Fortune outdueled Steve Corda as the Mets edged the Giants, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader. Fortune allowed 4 hits and 1 earned run while walking none and striking out 9. The Mets took advantage of some early wildness by Corda to take a 2-0 lead in the first on RBIs by Greg Cote and Kit Kadlec. The Giants pushed across an unearned run in the third on an RBI single by Brandon Moore to cut the deficit in half. In the 6th, the Mets extended the lead to 3-1 when Al Becker walked and stole second with two outs and scored on an RBI hit by Greg Cote. The run proved critical as Joe Cavaleri (2-for-3, HR, double) ripped a line-drive HR to left field in the 7th to get the Giants within a run. Greg Cote had both Mets hits against Corda, who allowed 3 runs, 3 walks and struck out 7 over 6 innings.

Tim Fortune has a 33-to-1 K/BB ratio; Greg Cote paced the Mets offense; Joe Cavaleri went deep for the Giants.
