In a thriller at the Circle, the Mets tallied an unearned run in the 8th to edge the Cardinals, 2-1. Bill Beauchesne went the distance for the Mets, scattering 8 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. For the Cardinals, Conrad Paquette took a tough loss, allowing 8 hits and 0 earned runs with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts over 7.2 innings. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the 4th when Jim O'Connell crushed a pitch the opposite way to right field for a triple and scored on a grounder by Carlos Portocarrero. In the bottom of the frame, the Mets tied the game on Seth Grossman's line-drive double to the gap in right-center. The score remained even at 1 until the bottom of the 8th. With 2 outs, Al Becker doubled and the inning stayed alive when Grossman reached on an infield error. Kit Kadlec then lofted a fly ball to shallow right that appeared to be the final out, but it was dropped and Becker raced home with the winning run.
