Beacon Hill Dodgers 2, Brighton Black Sox 0
Beacon Hill's Jon Merritt and Brighton's Matt Nicholson battled for 8 innings at Rogers Park before the Dodgers finally broke the deadlock in the top of the 8th.
Merritt, surely a YBL rookie-of-the-year candidate, threw a complete-game 4-hit shutout, settling down nicely after an early Sox threat in the 1st. Merritt struck out 6 and walked only 1 on his way to his 4th win of 2010.
Nicholson was also very impressive, scattering 5 hits over 8 IP, striking out and walking 2. Nicholson worked through a couple of jams early on, and nearly battled his way out of the 8th.
The Dodgers got a lead-off single from Jerrad Ryan in the 8th. After Ryan stole 2nd, Jay Shatto sac-bunted him to 3rd. Gregg Smith was then HBP and stole 2nd, and the Dodgers had a serious threat. Nicholson got Mike Navarro to pop out, which brought Nick Tapper to the dish with 2 outs. Tapper blasted a double on a 1-2 pitch to right-center, scoring Ryan and Smith. |
