On a day when the Mariners jumped out to an early lead, the Padres nearly had the last laugh. With 2 on and 2 out in the bottom of the 7th, trailing 5-3, the Padres' Chris Buckley (4-4, 4 singles) stroked a hit toward left center. The lead runner scored but M's CF Jeff Rausch gunned Charles Luoma out at the plate on a close play to end the game. For the Mariners, EJ Freni went the distance picking up his first victory of the season. Frank Rich (2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI), Matt Dumont (2-4, 2 RBI), and Jay LaPointe (2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI) paced the offense for the M's. Chris Buckley (4-4) and Christopher DaCamara (1-1, 1 2B, 2 RBI) provided the spark for the Padres.
