The Sox helped Brian Houlding celebrate his 24th birthday with their 5th straight win. Houlding tossed 6 innings for the win, allowing only 1 run and striking out 7.

Offensively, the Sox were held at bay by Kevin McGowan of the A's, who didn't allow a hit until the 4th inning when Mike Lembo singled. The Sox put up 2 runs in that frame, help of an RBI single from Dave Martin and a double-steal that allowed Martin to score when Jason Ackerson (who had also singled) stole second.

The Sox added two more runs in the 6th inning with an RBI double from Joe Fitzgerald and an RBI single from Earl Murphy, making the score 4-1.

In the 7th inning, the A's Santi Mazzeo homered to close the score to 4-2, then the A's loaded the bases before Al Wiesner closed the game for the Sox and the save.

Brian Houlding wins on 24th birthday; Santi Mazzeo homers for A's.
