The Bay State Pirates got out to an early lead over the Royals in Game 1 of the doubleheader. However, the Royals mounted a big comeback to take the lead in the 5th when they plated 5 runs, capped by a 3-run homer by James O'Neil. The Pirates appeared to turn an inning ending double play just moments earlier, but the ump questionably called the Bucs first basemen off the bag. The Bucs bounced right back in the top of the 6th, plating 4 runs off of Royals closer Eddie Lockhart. Paul Aseltine ran into more trouble on the mound in the 6th, but was relieved by rookie Matt Lucia who got out of the jam and went on to pitch a scoreless 7th inning to secure a Pirates win. The Bucs pounded out 15 hits with doubles by Andy Burkett, Jory Curran, Todd Elkin, Dan Brookfield and Nate Fishman. Tyler Jackson also chipped in with a great line, going 4 for 4 with 3 RBI, 3 runs and a stolen base.
