DBacks 16, Yankees 11
The Diamondbacks pulled off a major upset by outslugging the previously unbeaten Yankees 16 to 11. The D'backs offense was keyed by a 10 run 3rd inning. In that inning, the D'backs sent 15 men to the plate and had 6 hits (4 for extra bases). Big offensive games were put in by All-stars Jeremy Broadwell (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Brian Kilpatrick (1 for 3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) as well as Bill Schellbach (3 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Tommy Bligh and Skip Antash. The Yankees did most of their scoring early (including a grand slam by Jeff McHugh). Relief pitchers Scott Hruzd and Jeff Cain were able to settle the Yankees bats after the third with a little help from their defense. Catcher Aaron Molloy helped to kill rallies in the 4th and 5th innings by first turning a 1-2-3 double-play and later by picking a Yankee off third with the bases loaded. The win was the D'backs 5th in a row. |
