Bill Beauchesne, Tim Fortune and Kit Kadlec combined on a one-hitter as the Mets opened the season with a 4-0 win over the Astros. Beauchesne allowed only an infield single in 5 innings, walking 1 and striking out 5. Kadlec gave the Mets an early lead in the 2nd when he reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on Brian Rochette's single to center. In the 3rd, the Mets took advantage of Mike Vernon's wildness to put up a 3-spot on RBI walks by Al Becker and Greg Cote and an RBI grounder by Kadlec. For the Astros, Brian Dunton was outstanding in relief, tossing 3.2 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts. |
