Yankees 5, Royals 2
Jeff Coveney (2-3, triple 3 RBI) broke open a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 5th with a 2 out based loaded triple to give the Yanks a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish. The inning started with an AJ Bucciarelli HP and two infield singles by Todd Steffanides (2-3, 2R) and Frank Kowalski (1-3). With 2 outs, Royals starter Ariel Martinez almost got out of the jam until Coveney delivered the go-ahead runs.
On the hill, Quinn Ryan improved to 2-2 striking out 7 over 6 innings of work and allowing just 1 ER. Ken Kilduff pitched a perfect 7th for the save.
For the Royals Martinez pitched a complete game but picked up the loss. Greg Kosc had 2 hits in a losing effort.
