Bill Beauchesne improved to 7-1 with a two-hit complete game. Beauchesne needed only 70 pitches and faced three batters more than the minimum because the Mets turned three double plays and catcher Jason Blye caught three runners attempting to steal. Offensively the Mets got all they would need in the first when Al Becker singled in Jason Joyce and scored on a Greg Cote single. Dennis Wassung also had an RBI single in the first. Kit Kadlec had two hits for the Mets and Jim Turner got a base knock. Mike Elko pitched very well for the Athletics and Mike O'Brien reached base twice.
