Chad Besegai played an instrumental role in leading the Cubs over the White Sox, thus eliminating the Sox from playoff contention. In the 4th inning, he led off with a triple that sparked 4 straight Cubs hits and three runs. Then in the following inning, he ripped a 2-RBI single. With the game 5-3 in favor of the Cubs in the bottom of the 7th inning, the White Sox loaded the bases with 2 outs, thanks to a Jon Mead single and consecutive walks to Mike McInnis and Mike Lembo. Shane Steffens was brought in for relief from the pen and struck out the final batter to strand the tying and winning runners on base, and pick up his 1st save of the season. Keith Umlauf picked up the win (4-5), tossing 4 2/3 innings, while Doug Rexrode received the hold, prior to Steffen's save.
