rett Mandel's dramatic eigth-inning single pushed the Comets past the Muckdogs in the home opener for the Cardinal & Black. The 6-5 game one win was followed by a 10-2 complete game victory by Ryan Platzbacker in game two. The Comets (6-0) struck early in the early game, plating five runs in the first inning to take an early 5-1 lead. The offense stalled, however, and the Muckdogs methodically worked their way back into the game, eventually tying it in the seventh inning to force extra frames. Scott Kirby led off the eighth inning rally with a double, followed by an Adam Goldstein walk. DeWitt Brown was then hit by a pitch, setting up a bases loaded, no-out situation for Mandel with the game tied at five. Brett laced a single through the box, sending Kirby home and securing the Comets first win at DeVincent Field in 2011.
