Astros 3, Reds 1

 Summary | Box Score
Final 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Astros 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 3 7 1
Reds 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 7 1

Eric Harvey and a 3-run 2nd inning at the Circle brought the Astros into a 1st place tie with the Reds pending game 2. Harvey (8-3) was stingy, K'ing 7 and leaving the bases loaded twice.
In the second, a walk to Cory Edgar, an RBI 2B by Ron Viola, an RBI 1B by Jon Mayes (who stole 2nd) and an RBI 2B by Tony Ricupero gave the Astros the only runs they would get off Reds starter Chris Allen, who went the distance in the loss.
Josh Vernon turned in the play of the day, a game saver in right field in the 7th. With no outs and the bases loaded, Chris Chase pulled a screaming line drive to deep right and Vernon downright thieved him of extra bases. The leaping catch allowed only 1 to score on what could have been a GS. All agreed after the game that Chase hit the ball very hard and had Vernon not snared it, the ball would still be drinking at Mary Anne's.
