Well played game by both sides. The Cubs took an early 2-0 lead behind the very strong pitching of Matt Giamarco, scoring their second run on a freak pickoff play to second with pitcher Jon Story's throw hitting the runner in the helmet as he dove back to second. The Thunder crept back with one in the 6th and three in the 7th: Mike Valentino walked to lead off the inning, took 2nd on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Dave Brown. Frank Marr followed with a ground rule double and Jon Story triped to score Brown and Marr. The Cubs bounced back in the top of the 9th with 2 more on a walk to Steve Ceppi, a double by John Snyder and a Thunder error, but then relief pitcher Dave Patnaude took back control and got a line drive doubleplay and grounder to end the inning.
