Looking to avenge their first round playoffs lost last year, the Spinners took the season opener 2-0 against the Athletics. Luc Kocher pitched a complete game shutout, giving up five hits while striking out nine. The Spinners scored the only runs in the fifth, with Mike Mori leading off the inning by reaching base on an error. He advanced on a Mark Killoren single and an A's throwing error and later scored. Jay Gomes singled and drove in Killoren for the second run of the inning. The Spinners defense also came up with big plays. They forced a double play in the first and got out of a jam in the second with A's runners on second and third. Five different Athletics each had hits in the losing effort.
