Offseason free agent acquisition Kit Kadlec led the Marlins to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Rangers Tuesday night at Ryan. The Rangers' vaunted pitching staff was as good as advertised, as Shane Steffens, Kevin Kreuger, Jeff James and Jay Wisner combined to allow only four hits but Kadlec was able to match them all the way. Only twice did Kadlec find his way into a jam, and both times he escaped unscathed thanks to heroic efforts from his defense. In the sixth, Kadlec was helped by the defensive play of the game when Mike Mori gloved a high chopper and fired low to home to cut down Bernie Stevens. Jason Skypeck corralled the one hop throw and survived a collision at the plate to secure the out. That would be as close as the Rangers would come as Kadlec retired the last ten hitters. In the ninth, Skypeck again played the hero for the Fish, singling home Kevin Brennan with the winning run after three walks loaded the bases.
