Neil Doherty and the Marlins won the Wild Card game for the third straight year at historic Clifford Field. The Chancellor combined with Kevin Brennan and Kit Kadlec to stifle the Padres explosive offense after being spotted all the runs the Fish would need in the first two innings. Mike Mori and Al Becker got things started in the first with consecutive extra base hits, and a Paul Bracco single plated Becker to make it 2-0. Kadlec led off the second with a single to right, then advanced to third on a stolen base and passed ball and stole home on a broken squeeze play. With two outs Mori tripled home Andy Katz and Becker knocked in Mori again to run the score to 5-0.

The Padres fought back when Darwin Mesa settled into a groove. Baldassari, DeSilva and Mesa (HR) all delivered in key spots to make things uncomfortable for the Fish. After Doherty was knocked from the game, Kevin Brennan and Kadlec combined to shut the door.
