Mike McCarthy and Kyle Philson combined to shut down the Mets as the Rockies evened the conference semifinal series at 1. McCarthy struck out 11, walked none and was working on a 4-hitter heading to the 7th. In the 7th, Philson came on to pitch out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam despite allowing an Al Becker RBI hit. The Rockies jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a single by Gary Moran in the 1st. A fortunate break in the 4th, when a wild pitch snuck through a hole in the backstop, allowed a 3rd run to come in. Mike Close drilled an opposite-field HR in the 6th to make it 4-0. In the 7th, the Rockies iced it with a sac fly by Brian Cooper and an RBI by Jeff Shea. Kevin Spitz was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored. For the Mets, Steve Roberts allowed just 5 hits and 2 earned runs over 6 innings before the Rockies rallied in the 7th. Bill Beauchesne doubled and scored and did a nice job filling in behind the plate for the depleted Mets.
