The Orioles take Game 1 behind the strong pitching of Victor Ruiz.

The O's jumped out to a lead from the very beginning, as the first six Orioles to bat all reached base successively. Cutters starter Ken Kilduff then settled down to leave the bases loaded but the damage was done. That would turn out to be all the scoring that Ruiz would need.

The two pitchers each put zeroes on the board until the 5th, when Greg Gallivan doubled to center, driving in Chris Buckley and staking the O's to a 4-0 lead.

But then the Cutters rallied. In the 6th, Greg Crossman hit a solo HR to right to bring the score to 4-1. Then in the 7th, Booch singled and Frank Kowalski doubled him home to make it 4-2. With one out and the tying run at the plate, Ruiz got the next two batters to close out the game and wrap up the win.
