Wed, 21 September, 7:30PM, at Braintree - Braintree HS Varsity
Scituate Tides 3, Somerville Senators 0
The Tides move onto the finals for the second year in a row with a 3-0 win at Braintree HS. Again, pitching was the theme of the night, with Dave Iava returning to form, throwing a complete game 2-hit shutout. Dan Murray was the tough luck loser, fanning 15 in a complete game effort himself.
The Tides were led on offense by Thom Holdgate (2-4, 2RBI), Tony Anderlionis (2-4, 2R) and Russ Goodman (1-4, RBI). Bob Iandoli and Chuck Sjostedt collected the hits for the Sen's.
I wish this series was longer as it was the brand of baseball that keeps us coming back.
Congratulations to Alex Masel and the Senators for a great year.

In what has to go down as one of the best games in BMBL post-season history, Mark Krukonis and Steve Donovan both go the distance on the hill, with Donnie the tough luck loser giving up a run in the top of the 13th inning.
Krukonis fanned 9 while only yielding 4 singles and one walk. This writer was fortunate enough to be the battery-mate of the masterful performance.
Donnie was his usual stellar self, only surrendering 6 hits and fanning 9 himself. Smeglin made a couple of spectacular plays at 3rd.
With one out in the top of the 13th, Roy Chabra hit a long double off the fence in left. John Gainey walked and Rick Swanson hit into a fielders choice, setting up a 1st and 3rd situation with two outs. Tony Anderlionis then put down a perfectly placed bunt along the third base line for a base hit, plating the winning run.
These games are why we play. Great pitching and flawless D. Unfortunate someone had to lose. |

Somerville was paced on offense by Rousseau reaching base 3 times and Nicolo getting 2 hits.
Donovan pitches well, but struggles in the first and fifth. |

Great game. Dave Iava (2-1) and Bill Smeglin (complete game) both pitched outstanding. Tony Anderlionis picks up the save getting the final two outs in the ninth.
John Gainey (2-3, 2 RBI), Thom Holdgate (2-3), Russ Goodman (2/3), Jason Pithie (double), and Brendan Stone (double) led the Tides offense. For the Sen's, Peter "Shrek" Nicolo (2-3, BB - and boy can he run...LOL) and Cary McConnell (2-3) had good days at the plate.
Good defense turned in all day by both the shortstops, Anderlionis for the Tides and Russ Ward for Somerville. |

Somerville Senators 3, Waltham Red Sox 2
Steve Donavan(as usual) and Dan Pill both pitched great. But it was the Waltham Bull Pen that could not get the job done and keep the game tied in the seventh. After striking out the first batter, Jimmy MC Elroy walked the next 3 in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases for Mark Moise. Then after another pitching change, Moise singled to left off the second Waltham Reliever of the inning, Paul Tiano, to win it with one out. Good game all around.
