Aaron Bend had a great game scattering eight hits with 9 strikeouts and allowing only two runs in a complete game effort. Bend who improved to 5-1 today also chipped in with 2 runs scored. Bill Schellbach had a key 2-out 2-run single to put the d-backs ahead for good. Jeremy Broadwell had three hits for the d-backs.

Shane Steffens was a homerun shy of the cycle today going 3-3 for the cubs.

Ariel Martinez threw a 8 inning complete game while giving up only 4 hits, and stiking out a career high 15 Cubs. Martinez was in danger of losing this gem due to some timely Cub hitting until he helped himself out in the 5th with a game tying, 2-out RBI double.

The score stayed tied 2-2 until the 8th when the Royals put the game away with a go-ahead RBI single by Drew Kowalevicz followed-up by a 2 RBI single by Felix Villalobos.

Mike Bristol kept the Royals at bay for most of the day on the mound. He went the full 8IP for the tough loss. Brian Delaney had a big day for the Cubs. He doubled in the 4th and later scored, and gunned out a runner at the plate in the 5th to keep things tied up.

Tyler Walsh tossed a complete game two-hit shutout to pace the Astros to a 6-0 victory over the Cubs in a morning duel at East Boston Stadium.
The game was played very well defensively by both sides.
Mike Vernon (2-for-4, R, RBI) knocked a first inning double which scored Walsh for the game-winner. "Trot" also turned a big unassisted double play from shortstop in the fourth.
Cory Edgar showcased a solid glove in center and plated Josh "D-Lowe" Vernon (1-for-2, 2R, 2SB) in the fifth for the Astros second run.
The Astros got another in the sixth on a base hit by Mike Vernon, a well-placed groundout by Dan Schumaker and an RBI single by Kevin Gorman.
Walsh added a two-run double in the seventh to extend the lead to six after Josh Vernon had walked, stole second and third, and scored when the ball got passed the third baseman.
Mark Andolina pitched well going the distance for the Cubs, but took the hard luck loss.

T-Dubb, Trot and D-Lowe either scored or drove in all six runs. Walsh records first Astros shutout in a really long time.

The Indians beat the Cubs 6-1 on a hot night at the Circle.

Jason DeVeau picked up his sixth win of the year. DeVeau allowed two hits and one unearned run over six innings. He struck out eight. Josh Hale closed with a 1-2-3 seventh including two K's.

At the plate, Marco Abreu led the Tribe, going 3-4 with an RBI and run scored. Brook Smith broke open the game in the first, knocking in two with a triple to right. Lee Hughes picked up his 100th career hit, going 1-3 on the night with a run scored.

Shane Steffens pitched well for the Cubs and also went 1-2 with a walk.

The Indians defeated the Cubs 4-1 Wednesday night at EB Stadium.

Jason DeVeau picked up his fifth victory of the season, throwing 5 and 1/3 innings of 3-hit ball. DeVeau allowed just one earned run and struck out 8 Cubs.

Marco Abreu and Brook Smith both had an RBI and run scored for the Tribe. Josh Hale closed with 1 and 2/3 innings of no hit ball to pick up the save, and also went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

For the Cubs, Shane Steffens went 1-3 and knocked in a run. Petro and Bristol also had hits for the Cubbies.

Paul McInnis pitched the Dodgers first shutout of the year in defeating the Cubs. McInnis struck out 7, and allowed only 4 hits and 1 walk in his 7 innings of work. Fabian Alicea supported McInnis' efforts as he went three for four, had 3 RBIs, and stole home. Josue Feliciano was the catalyst at the top of the order as he scored 3 runs. Sandy Gonzalez and Mario Saenz each had two hits for the Dodgers. Jason Hanson caught McInnis' shutout as he filled in behind the plate for all-star catcher Gonzalez.

The Cubs played their typical outstanding game on defense and shortstop Mike Pietrasiewicz showed great range on several plays. However, McInnis was too tough to solve at the plate on this day.

D-backs out slugged the cubs in a game that featured 21 hits combined. Jeff Cain (2-3,3b,bb 3r) set the tone at the top of the d-backs order going. Rockers, Shellbach, Broadwell, and Kilpatrick also had multi-hit games for the d-backs. Lees and Sharma had two hits a piece for the cubs.

Despite just 4 hits, the Yankees made them count. Jeff Coveney (2-3, 3 RBI) and Mike Moloney (2-3, 2 doubles) provided the offensive punch to help lead the Yanks to their 5th straight victory.

On the hill, Ken Kilduff improved to 5-1, allowing 3 hits while striking out 8 over 5 innings. Paul Reggio and Ned Coffee finished it up throwing 3 scoreless innings a piece. Defensively, Ned Coffee was spectacular behind the dish nailing two would-be base stealers and picking off another.

Shane Steffens was the hard luck loser allowing just 4 hits in 5 innings of work. Michael Pietrasiewicz stayed hot for the Cubs going 2 for 3 with a double.

After the Braves rallied to tie the game 7-7 in the top of the 7th inning, the Cubs came back and won the game in the bottom of the 7th. More details to follow.

The story of this game was Rob Sherman, who struck out an amazing 17 Cubs on his way to his 4th straight win and 3rd straight complete game. With the win, the A's tied the franchise record for wins with 14 games still to play.

Mike Bolio was the only A's player to have two hits, and also drove in a run with a 3rd inning double. Santi Mazzeo drove in 2 runs, and Mike Elko hit his 3rd triple of the season.

For the Cubs, Mike Bristol pitched a solid 6 1/3 innings, but was the tough luck loser. Erik Rego and Chad Besegai both had 2 hits as well.

Behind a strong pitching performance from Al Wiesner, the White Sox regained 1st place in the Atlantic. Wiesner allowed 4 hits, 3 walks, 1 run and K'd 6 in a complete game victory.

Offensively, the Sox were led by John Howe who went 3 for 3. In the 2nd inning, Howe drove in Hugh Guilderson (who singled) for the Sox' first run. And Howe scored the 2nd run when he stole home for the go-ahead run as part of a double-steal with Roger Malouf, who had singled. In the 3rd inning, Jim Baldyga was intentionally walked to load the bases for Brett Rudy with Dan Field & Mike McInnis on 2nd and 3rd base respectively. Rudy proceeded to drive in the 3rd Sox run on a sac fly. In the 6th inning, after singling again, John Howe scored the 4th run when Roger Malouf drove him in with his second single of the day.

Chris Seng scored the lone Cubs run after reaching via walk and scoring on a John Gillis single. Jot Splenda took the loss for the Cubs.

Al Wiesner improves to 2-0; John Howe goes 3 for 3.

The Cubs played great defence and had timely hitting to down the Marlins. The Cubs spread the hitting around with almost every starter tallying one hit. Ritesh Sharma had a great defense play and also had a big hit to knock in Chad Besegai in the 5th to give the Cubs some insurance. Shane Steffens threw a complete game 4 hitter with no earned runs and 5 K's to pick up the win. The Marlins catcher Montoya had a pick 2-out single in the 2nd to knock in their 2 runs.

Tim Fortune went the distance on a 4-hitter, walking none and striking out 8, for his first win of the year despite a 1.81 ERA.

Dave McManus drove in 3 runs with an RBI single and a 2-run triple. McManus is now tied for the MABL lead in RBIs with 9. Greg Cote also drove in 3 runs for the Mets with a pair of RBI singles and a sac fly. Chris Sansone scored 3 runs, drove in another and stole a pair of bases on a 2-for-3 day. Dennis Wassung reached base all 3 times up, including 2 hits. Jay Joyce walked 3 times, stole 2 more bases to increase his league lead, and scored twice.

For the Cubs, Mike Pietrasiewicz had a single and a double and scored a run. Mark Andolina took the loss in relief.

Fortune hopes his hard luck is behind him; McManus continues to come through in the clutch; Cote builds a picket fence of RBIs.

Ariel Martinez (6 IP, R, 4H, 0BB, 9K) cotinued his mastery of the Cubs, but he was matched by Shane Steffens (6.1, 7H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 3K) pitch for pitch through 6 innings. In the 1st, the Royals got on unearned run off of Steffens as Matt Marenghi reached on an error and was later plated by a Jason Lewis Double (2 for 2, 2B, BB, RBI). The Cubs got their lone run when Mike Pietrasiewicz (2 for 3, R, 2SB) scored from 3rd after a throw got away from the SS.

Then in the 7th Matt Marenghi took over the game as he pitched a perfect inning K'ing all three batters he faced. Then in the botton half of the frame he drove home Corey Son (2 for 3, R, SB) with a walk off RBI single.

It was an exciting game at Cleveland Cirlce on Wednesday night. The Yankees took an early lead and loaded the bases in the third inning with one out. Ron Merryman, who is a newcomer to the Cubs, pitched his way out of the jam and recorded a strong 4-inning performance. Mark Andolina closed the game with 3 innings of shutout baseball. Combined, the Cubs' pitching gave up only 3 hits on the day and despite the wet conditions, the Cubs' defense played flawlessly.

After stranding 9 runners through the first 5 innings, the Cubs were able to load the bases in the 6th inning with two infield singles from Erik Rego(2-3) and Brian Carvello, along with a well-placed bunt from John Gillis. With two outs and the bases loaded, Chad Besegai(2-3) came up big with the game winning single up the middle.

Quinn Ryan pitched well for the Yankees, delivering 6K's, 4BB's, 7 Hits and 1ER.

The White Sox jumped out to a quick lead scoring 4 runs in the first inning, capped by a 3-run homerun by Joe Lombardi.

In the 4th inning, singles by Dan field (2 for 4), Mike McInnis (1 for 2) and a double by Jim Baldyga (2 for 3) brought the score to 6-0. By the end of the 5th inning, the Sox had increased the lead to 9-0 after singles by Jason Ackerson (1 for 2), Mike Lembo (2 for 3), John Howe (1 for 1), Roger Malouf (2 for 4) and a sacrifice fly from Eamonn McDonough.

Eamonn McDonough (2-3, 0.58 ERA) picked up the win with 9 K's through 5 innings, allowing only 3 hits. McDonough remains the MABL league-leader in K's with 37. After a brief stint by Jim Lane, Brian Houlding (0-0, 2.50 ERA) pitched the final 2 innings, recording 7 K's -- a White Sox record for a 2-inning stretch. Houlding now ranks 2nd in the MABL with 22 K's. In total, Sox pitchers recorded 16 K's on the day.

The Giants improved to 3-0 on the season with a 7-0 victory over the Cubs. Dan Shanahan made his first start of 2003 and delivered a 5 inning, 2 hit, 6 K, no run performance.

The Cubs hung tight with the Giants until the pivotal 5th inning, when Jeff Decoteau cleared the bases with double. This opened up the lead, which given to the Giants in the 1st with an unearned run and a 4th inning RBI by Tom Hague. Steve Corda slammed the door in the 6th and 7th with an outstanding relief appearance.

The Cubs only threatened once, in the 4th , with 2 runners on, Dan Shanahan delivered 2 key strikeouts.

The Cubs spread their hitting as 8 different players collected hits to beat the Braves. Mike Ferris went 2 for 3 to lead the way. Shane Steffens picked up the win with 5 innings of work allowing only 1 infield hit and striking out 8. Mark Andolina picked up the save striking out 5 of the last 6 outs.
Chris Allen threw an excellent game for the Braves striking out 9.

Rob Chase began the 2003 season with a bang. He collected three triples, four RBIs, and scored three times. He also pitched the final two innings to collect his first save of the season. Chase's three triples tied former Pirate Vin Paquette's MABL record for triples in a game originally set in 2000.

Glenn Perham started the game going 4 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits for the no decision. Jason Gesing also had a multiple hit game while scoring once.

For the Cubs, Shane Steffens pitched two scoreless innings. Michael Pietrasiewicz also collected two hits on the day.
