In a rematch of their August 2nd regular season game, the Royals sent Ryan Bowen to the hill once again countered by Greg Doucette of the Gators. The Gators scored first in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground out by Jay Thomas, but the Royals would plate 4 of their own in the bottom of the frame. Capped off by a big two run double by Mike McKie who also added an RBI ground out in the 3rd inning. The Royals scored three more runs in the 4th on a two run single by Ryan Ritell and an RBI single by Scott Weber. Bowen once again put forth a strong effort against a tough Gators team and picked up the win going 6 innings giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

The Royals won their first playoff game since 2012 in a blowout over the Boston Cubs on Sunday. Scoring 16 runs on 18 hits, the Royals cruised to a first round victory. 8 of the 9 starters got at least 1 hit and a few players put up huge games including Mike Ahearn (4-5, 3R, RBI, 2SB), Ryan Ritell (2-4, 3R, 2B, 3RBI, BB, 2SB), Gary Carmona (4-5, 3R, 3RBI), and James O'Neil (3-4 2R, 2B, RBI, BB). Not to be overlooked, Justin Chere pitched another gem picking up the win going 6 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts. The Royals now face the Metro Gators on Thursday in Round 2.

Needing one win on the day to secure a playoff birth, the Cubs sent Billy McGee to the hill against Chris Johnson. McGee scattered 9 hits over a complete game victory while giving up 2 runs (1 earned) and walking none. McGee was backed by a resurgent Cubs offense led by Brian McCarthy. A big, 4 run 3rd broke the game open as Carpentier and McCarthy singled, Walz chipped in with an RBI ground out, and, following a walk to Daughtrey, Mike Ray hit a 2-run triple to deep right center and came in to score on a throwing error at 3rd. The Royals head into the postseason as the #2 seed while the Cubs will host the Quincy Pirates on Friday, 8/21 as the #8 seed.

The Royals took on the Cubs on Sunday needing one win to secure the #2 Seed for the upcoming playoffs. And in Game 1 they did just that. After the Royals jumped to an early 4-0 lead, the Cubs chipped away and after a few innings of back and forth scoring for both sides, the Royals entered the bottom of the sixth inning with the score 6-5. It was then that the Royals bats exploded for 6 runs on 6 hits making it 12-5. It was the most hits and runs that the Royals offense had in a single game this season and was lead by Ryan Ritell's monster day at the plate (3-3, R, 2B, 5RBI, SAC Fly). Ryan Bowen picked up his 3rd win of the season pitching 6 innings while Kevin Ceurvels closed the door with a scoreless 7th. The win officially secured the 2 seed for the Royals.

Justin Chere (W, 6IP, 7H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 6K) put forth another strong start for his team leading 5th win. And after being shut down for the first three innings by Alec Palioca, the Royals bats woke up and scored 7 runs on 7 hits over the next 1 1/3 innings chasing the Mariner's ace from the game. Ryan Ritell, Scott Weber, Gary Carmona, James O'Neil, and Mike McKie all picked up RBIs in the game.

The Royals got another strong performance from pitcher Ryan Bowen (W, 6IP, 8H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 6K) and took advantage of a few Gators errors to win 3-2. Tied at 2 apiece entering the top of the seventh, Mike Ahearn reached on an E5 and after Dominic Coviello hit his 3rd single of the game, Ryan Ritell grounded out to short scoring Ahearn. Eddie Lockhart picked up his league leading 3rd Save of the season pitching a 1-2-3 seventh.

After going 1-4 during the month, the Royals looked to salvage their final July game vs the Nationals. Rookie Matt Bui (W, 6IP, 2H, 3R, 1ER, 5BB, 8K) picked up the win in his first career start and the bats came alive as the Royals collected 11 hits on the night. Mike Ahearn, Gary Carmona, Scott Weber, and Kevin Ceurvels all picked up 2 hits and the Royals went on to win 8-3.

Ariel Ramos (7IP; 10K, 2BB, 9H) found himself in some trouble early in the first inning allowing the first 5 batters of the game to reach. 2 runs scored before he struck out the side and kept anyone from scoring till the 7th. The Braves offense floundered all game until 2 outs in the 7th, down by two. Donnell Hightower (2-3; R, 2RBI) hit a two-run single followed by a two run double by Fernando Osario (2-4; 2B, 2RBI). That was enough for the Braves as they won 5-3 taking back first place.

The Royals went into this past weekend a half game out of first place behind the Malden Braves. And on Friday night, some timely hitting and a great pitching performance by Chris Johnson put the Royals in first place with a 5-2 victory. Johnson went 6 innings giving up 2 runs (both unearned) on 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 Ks. Kevin Ceurvels pitched a scoreless 7th inning notching his first save of the season. With the game tied at 2 in the top of the 5th, Mike Ahearn hit a pop up behind the pitchers mound which hit off the glove of second baseman Matt Church. With no one covering second base, Ahearn hustled around first base and when an errant throw to try and get him skipped into center field, Ahearn just kept running and made it to third base. Dominic Coviello drove him in with an RBI single and two batters later, Bryan Weber singled to left driving in two more runs putting the Royals on top for good.

CANTON -- The Norfolk County Mariners looked to gain a game in the standings against the first place Newton Royals Sunday morning. As if the 90 degree heat at Gibson Field wasn't enough, Alec Palioca was serving a healthy diet of heaters all game long as he struck out 15 Royals -- his third start in a row with 15 strikeouts. The Mariners got key RBI singles from Chris Horne and Scott Haley in the 1st and 4th innings respectively. In typical Mariners fashion, the game came down to the final at-bat as Palioca battled Mike McKie for 17 pitches with the tying and winning runs on 1st and second for the Royals. After what seemed like hours, with the sellout crowd on the edge of their seats, McKie popped out to short to end the game.

Looking to bounce back from a loss in Game 1 of the double header, the Royals wasted no time as they opened Game 2 with 5 straight hits. Gary Carmona, Scott Weber, and Bryan Weber each picked up RBIs as the Royals plated 5 runs in the first inning. Scott Weber added some insurance in the top of the seventh when he launched a solo homerun over the left field fence. Down to their final out, the Quincy Pirates bounced back. Andy Burkett delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Andrew Ostashen and spark a three-run seventh inning rally in support of Bucs starter Paul Aseltine. The Giants made it close getting 3 runs in the sixth but the Royals held on for win improving to 6-2.

The Newton Royals continued their hot start to the 2015 season defeating the Cambridge Thunder 9-3. Kevin Ceurvels made his first start of the year and put in five solid innings picking up up the win. Ceurvels got plenty of support from the Royals bats. Gary Carmona went 3-4 with a triple, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI. The Royals also got RBI's from Scott Weber, Ryan Ritell, and Justin Chere.

After dropping Game 1 of the double header 9-4, the Royals came back strong in Game 2 beating the Indians 5-2. Behind Justin Chere's great performance on the mound (6IP, 7H, 2R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K), the Royals offense put up 5 runs in the early going and cruised to victory. Mike Ahearn and Derek Palatino each scored twice and had 2 hits. The Royals also got RBIs from Dominic Coviello, Ryan Ritell, and James O'Neil. Eddie Lockhart had a 1-2-3 seventh inning to pick up his first save of the year.

Rookie Chris Johnson made his Royals pitching debut this past Sunday and was nothing short of dominant. He silenced the Nationals bats all game allowing only an infield single as he cruised to a complete game shutout . His final line was 7IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 2HBP, and 6K earning him CABL Pitcher of the Week.

The Royals bats picked up some timely hits as Gary Carmona and Derek Palatino picked up RBI singles in the first and third innings respectively. Ryan Ritell (2-3, R, 2B) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 7th and the Royals went on to win 3-0.

The Newton Royals opened up the season with a big win against the North Shore Giants behind a strong performance by Justin Chere who went 5 innings allowing 1 run on 6 hits with 3 Ks. The Royals offense provided plenty of support right from the start picking up 2 runs in the top of the first on back to back doubles by Gary Carmona and Scott Weber. The Royals bats then showed their patience in the 3rd inning walking 5 times en route to a 5 run inning. Eddie Lockhart pitched two scoreless frames to finish the game.

The Royals take on the Waltham Nationals next Sunday at Gann Academy in Waltham.
