A's ADVANCE IN TIGHT CONTEST The A's mustered just enough offense behind their outstanding pitchers to win and advance to the semifinals. Jason Kurtz went five strong innings in the win. He struck out five and yielded just five hits. In the first inning, Matt Asdornvuttikrai hit a double to right center. After advancing on a passed ball, Nick Tapper drove him in with a rare infield single. In the fifth, the A's scraped another run across. Warren Asdornvuttikrai singled through the 3-4 hole, and advanced to second on a passed ball. He scored on an Alan Donaruma pop up that the Sox shortstop couldn't handle. The Red Sox struck back in their half of the fifth. Tyler Ferdinand doubled down the left field line and got to third on Chand's sinble. Lenane then hit a deep fly to right for the sac. The A's Brian Mylett then closed the book with the two-inning save.

The A's took a wild game 1 in Middleborough. The Sox dominated early, plating three runs in the first and two in the third. Highlights include a Ratcliff 2-RBI single. The Sox added a sixth run in the sixth. The A's bats were silent, managing just one run on a third-inning Tapper double. Then the bottom of the seventh happened. O'Keefe walked. Kronick singled. Donaruma singled, scoring O'Keefe. Asdornvuttikrai singled, driving in a run. Tapper walked. McIntyre singled, plating two. Tapper then scored on a passed ball. Tie game--but far from over. In top 8, Chand reached on an error, and used his legs to get the run. He advanced to third on a ball in the dirt. Then he scored on the throwdown to first on a dropped third strike. In the bottom of the eighth, the A's loaded the bases with nobody out. Asdornvuttikrai barely beat out a double play ball, allowing the tying run to score. O'Keefe scored on a passed ball.

A's BEST SOX Matt Rosenzweig yielded just two runs on five hits, while striking out six. He picked up his second consecutive win for the A's. Alan Donaruma, Andrew Billig, and Brett O'Keefe provided the bulk of the offense for the A's. Donaruma reached base four times and had two RBI singles. Billig went 3-for-4 and drove in a run of his own. O'Keefe blasted two hits and scored twice. Tom McIntyre put the game out of reach with a two-RBI single in the fifth.
