Bravos Bravos Bravos win their first playoff series in 32 years!
Both clubs sent their Game 1 starters (Clang & Smitty) back to the hill on 3 days' rest and neither disappointed. The only run allowed in the game was unearned, when Risk singled in Robb who had reached on an error.
Props to the A's on another hard-fought series, and best wishes to Chief in retirement!
Series standouts:
Smitty: 2-0, 1.00 ERA
ALee: .571 (8-14), 3 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI

Another incredible battle between these two teams, and the Braves walk off with a win!
Game remained scoreless through 3. Lambert drives in a run with 2 outs in the top of the 4th. Uberti answers with a solo homer to right, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom half.
Braves plate a run in the 5th on a bloop by Lee, scoring Huddy. But in the top of the 6th, the A's put men on 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. Wheeler drives a bomb to the gap in left center, the tying run scores, but the Braves cut down the would-be-go-ahead run with an 8-6-2 relay.
A's score 1 more in the 7th when a wild pitch gets through the gate with a man on 3rd. In the bottom half, Kerby leads off with a BB, Coscione bunts him over, Lee drives in the run & advances to second, and then Robb delivers the walkoff single to shallow left.
Braves take 2-1 series lead. |

In a rematch of last year's 1st round series, these 2 teams picked up right where they left off, battling back and forth in another nailbiter. Both teams had uncharacteristic defensive jitters, which cost them both some runs, but Clanger and Smitty both battled the whole night.
A's jump out to a 2-0 lead on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Braves answer in the next frame with 4 runs, capped by a tremendous 3-run double to left center by Uberti.
The A's chipped away with another run in the 4th, and tied it up in the 6th on a mammoth HR to left by Katsi.
In the top of the 7th, after two quick outs, Teddy Ballgame draws a walk, Robb singles, and Uberti comes up huge again with an RBI single to right, giving them the 5-4 lead.
The A's put men on 1st & 3rd in the 7th, but Smitty induces a 4-3 grounder to end the game.
Braves earn 1st postseason victory since 1981. |

Braves get some timely hitting and another strong outing by Smith for the victory over East Boston as the Braves clinch a postseason birth in consecutive seasons.
A great matchup in Peabody after a last minute field change pitted Hueston vs Smith. Hueston started strong throwing 3 scoreless. Knights jumped out in the 1st on a leadoff single and a double. Knights add another in the 3rd. Braves finally got to Hueston in the 4th plating 3 on a bases loaded HBP and a Lee 2 run single. Braves add an insurance run in the 5th on a SAC Fly by Tracy to score Uberti. Smith (3 H, 2 R, 8 K) let up a single and double in the 1st and another double in the 3rd but would shut the door on the Knights for the rest of the game facing just one more than the minimum over the last 4 frames.
Lee (3-4, 2 RBI) and Uberti (2-3, R) continued their hot streaks at the plate for the Braves.
Paulino, Mercado (2B) and Harris (2B) had the hits for the Knights |
