Yanks win the series and advance to the Semi Finals as Paul Reggio earned his 1st playoff victory tossing 5 innings allowing 1 ER on 5 hits while striking out 5. Quinn Ryan closed out the final two frames allowing 1 run (0 ER). Defensively, the Yankees infield was superb with several diving plays by 2nd basemen AJ Bucciarelli and 3rd basemen Jeff Coveney to thwart several Cubs rallies.

Six Yankees had multi-hit games highlighted by Todd Steffanides (3-4, 3R, double), Adam Frauton (2-3, 3 RBI, triple) and Jeff McHugh (2-2, 3 RBI, double). Jeff Coveney (2-4, 2 RBI), Frank Kowalski (2-3, RBI, triple) and Greg Crossman (2-3) also had two hits.

For the Cubs, Shane Steffens took the loss. Chad Besegai had two hits for the Cubs.

The Cubs drew 1st blood in the 1st inning scoring a run on a Mike Pietrasiewicz single and a Chad Besegai triple. That’s all the hitting Bryan Gauvin and Ken Kilduff would allow. Gauvin earned the victory pitching 5 innings allowing just those 2 hits and 1 ER while striking out 11. Kilduff hurled two hitless innings to close out the game while striking out 4.

Cubs starter, Steve Guerrera held the Yankees at bay with only 5 hits. However, a Frank Kowalski (1-2, RBI) solo blast in the 2nd and a Jeff Coveney (1-3, 2 RBI) RBI single in the 3rd gave the Yanks all the lead they would need. With 3 Cubs errors, the Yankees pushed 4 across in the 4th with just 1 hit in the inning by AJ Bucciarelli (2-4, 2R, SB).

Shane Steffens and Keith Umlauf shared pitching duties and held the Braves to 1 run to clinch the Atlantic wildcard slot.

The Cubs were led by the splendid defense of Brian Delaney who in left field, made multiple over the shoulder and diving catches to save a handful of Braves baserunners. Delaney also had a huge 2 out, 2 strike 2 RBI double in the 5th.

Mike Pietasiewicz also had a great game, going 3 for 3 with a run scored and the game winning RBI.

Chris O'Sullivan pitched the complete game for the Braves and took the tough loss.

Josh Vernon picked up his first MABL win and Vinay Chakravarthy his first MABL save as the 'Stros four-hit the Cubs. Mike Vernon was 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBI. Nate Kenyon, Jeff Coco, and Cory Edgar each had a pair of hits.

In an exciting game, the Cubs pulled out the late victory led by Doug Lohse who went 2-3 with a run scored and and the game winning RBI in the 7th and Jeff Seng, whose pinch hit double knocked in the added insurance run. Shane Steffens picked up the complete game win, giving up no earned runs, and striking out 5.

The Indians were led by Daryl Pina on the mound, letting up only 6 hits and striking out 8.

Cubs took a quick 4-0 lead off the Mariner's starter Justin Wetherby, but the Mariners slowly chipped away at Umlauf, cutting the lead to 4-2 after 4.
Kevin Gallagher shut down the Cubs offense when he took over on the mound in the third and didn't allow a hit through 5 innnings of work. In the bottom of the 7th, the M's rallied behind clutch hitting and some Cub fielding difficulties and pulled off the 5-4 win, capped off by Mark Balfe's GWRBI single.

Doug Rexrode threw a complete game gem, allowing only 2 earned runs and 6 hits to get the win. The Cubs defense stepped up as well: Bill Dube made a diving catch behind the plate on a fouled off bunt and Jeff Seng had a putout at second base from left field on a single. Brian Delaney continued his sizzling hitting by going 3-4 with 2 more triples, 2 RBI's and a run scored.

Tom Deveau had a terrific outing on the mound Saturday afternoon against the division rival Cubs. He threw a complete game, allowing only 3 runs in the third, picking up 4 strike outs along the way.
Mark Balfe led the Mariner offense with 3 hits. Mike Freni added a double and homerun (2 for 3, 2 runs scored).
Shane Steffens pitched well for the Cubs in the losing effort.

Chad Besegai played an instrumental role in leading the Cubs over the White Sox, thus eliminating the Sox from playoff contention.

In the 4th inning, he led off with a triple that sparked 4 straight Cubs hits and three runs. Then in the following inning, he ripped a 2-RBI single.

With the game 5-3 in favor of the Cubs in the bottom of the 7th inning, the White Sox loaded the bases with 2 outs, thanks to a Jon Mead single and consecutive walks to Mike McInnis and Mike Lembo. Shane Steffens was brought in for relief from the pen and struck out the final batter to strand the tying and winning runners on base, and pick up his 1st save of the season.

Keith Umlauf picked up the win (4-5), tossing 4 2/3 innings, while Doug Rexrode received the hold, prior to Steffen's save.

Chad Besegai flairs Cubs offense with 2 timely hits.

Shane Steffens of the Cubs defeated Sam Voolich and the White Sox in one of the tightest pitching duels of the season. Steffens allowed only 2 hits (to Jon Mead and Jim Baldayga) for the complete game victory. Voolich allowed only 4 hits in 5.2 innings for the hard loss.

Without knowing it at the time, the Cubs put the game away early scoring 2 runs in the first inning, keyed by a Michael Pietrasiewicz single, a Jeff Seng walk, and a Shane Steffens 2-RBI triple. However, in the 5th, the Cubs added insurance as Mike Ferris singled and Petro hit him in with his second hit.

Steffens tosses 2-hitter and rips 2 RBI triple; Sam Voolich looses 4-hitter.

Steve Guarerra threw another gem and the Cubs played spectacular defense (turning 4 double plays in the game) to pick up the win. Chris Seng had another big day, going 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI's. Sloppy defense by the Broncos also helped lead to the 9 Cubs' runs and the game was called after 6 innings.

Jim Belcastro's 2 run single broke a 3-3 tie in the 7th and propelled the Braves (13-8) to a 6-3 victory Wednesday Night at Clifford Field. Chris Allen got the win for the Braves, going the distance on an impressive 6 hitter while striking out 8. Jon Danielson had 2 hits to lead the Braves offense. For the Cubs, Guarrera and Besegai (HR) each had 2 hits in defeat.

Shane Steffens struck out 14 and picked up the complete game win, and Michael Ferris had a huge day for the Cubs, going 3-4 with 2 RBI's including knocking in the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th. The Cubs were up 5-1 going in to the top of the 5th, when Reardon homered for the Marlins to start them off. 4 hits later and the game was tied at 5 all. Steffens then led off the bottom of the 7th with a triple. The Marlins intentionally walked the next two batters to get the force at home but Ferris hit the second pitch over the head of the leftfielder to win an exciting game.

The Yanks bounced back from a tough loss on Thursday to pick up their 15th victory backed by 5 strong innings from rookie Paul Reggio (1R, 4 hits). Ken Kilduff pitched 2 scoreless innings while striking out 5 to close it out.

Offensively, a 7 run 5th was the key as the Yankees broke open a 2-1 tie on 6 straight hits. 6 Yankees had multi-hit games including:

Gary Moran powered the offense with a stellar day at the plate, going 2-3, 2B, 3B, 3RBIs. Mike Close helped out with his 2-3, 1R, 1RBI perfomance. But the battle on the mound between Umlauf and O'Keeffe kept the game moving and the hits not so easy to get. In the end, it was O'Keeffe taking the victory striking out 13, walking 3, allowing 6 hits. Ricky Corson rounded off the attack as his 2-2, 2R day capped a great game by both teams. For the Cubs, Simone's 3RBI triple and 2R scored on the day wasn't enough to help Umlauf (CG, 10H, 5K, 5ER).

The Cardinals jumped out in the top of the first with 2 runs but the Cubs followed up with 4 of their own in the bottom half. Keith Umlauf stayed strong all 7 innings, striking out 6 and benefiting from an appeal at 3rd base where a Cardinal player missed the bag on the way home. That run would have tied the game in the 5th, but instead the scored remained 4-3. Finally, the Cardinals had runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs in the top of the 7th, but Mike Pietrasiewicz made a bang bang play on a ball deep in the hole at short for the final out.

Zach Fisher made a successful MABL debut on Wednesday night at historic Clifford Field for the Dodgers. Zach, the younger brother of 2001 MABL Rookie of the Year Garret Fisher, struck out 16, walked only 1, scattered 5 hits, and allowed only an unearned run in picking up the complete-game victory. Garrett supported his brother with a line shot to very deep centerfield for a homerun. Earlier in the game, Dodger 2002 first-round pick, John Mallin doubled home scrappy veteran Scott Gilefsky with the first run of the game. Gilefsky also added two RBIs to pace the Dodger attack. Catcher Pete Magyar scored two runs in his first game of the year.

Shane Steffens shined for six innings on the hill for the Cubs in picking up the tough loss.

Palumbo went 3 for 3 on the day, scoring 3 times. Ariel Martinez kept the Cubs at bay with 4 strong innings for his 2nd win of the season. Martinez recorded 6 Ks and only gave up 1 run on 2 hits. Tom Spoth and Sam Elsner closed the door by pitching 3 combined scoreless innings. For the Cubs, Shane Steffens had 2 hits, including a double, and scored their run.

Rookie JP Houle had a key bases loaded hit in the 4th to knock in 2 runs and give the Yanks a 4-1 lead. Jeff Coveney (2-4) and Anthony Bucciarelli (2-4) had multi-hit games to help the Yanks cause. Cubs starter Keith Umlauf pitched well for the Cubs (5 runs, 0 ER) but took the loss.

Reliver, Santos Gonzalez, struck out 4 of the last 6 batters to shut down the Cubs. Broncos leadoff hitter Emmanuel Cuello was 2 for 4 with 3 R, RBI, 3B, 2B, SB. Frances Peguero was 2 for 4 with a run and 2 RBI. For the Cubs, Chad Besegai was 2 for 2 with a BB, SB, and bases clearing triple in the 3rd inning.
