Waltham Red Sox 11, Malden Storm 7
After being dominated in game 2 by Malden and Tom Manning, Waltham's offense and intensity showed up in the rubber match of a series between 2 good ball clubs.
The Sox put up 11 runs on 15 hits with Mike Barthel leading the way going 3-5, while Brian Spadafino, Jon Churchill, Bill Gross and Dan Pill all had 2 hits each. Derek Luccini and Dan Pill had 3 RBI each while Spadafino and Dana Levensaler added 2 steals each.
Storm came within 1 when they got 3 in the seventh. With the tying run on first, Mike Barthel dives to stab a liner up the first base line and tags the bag for the inning ending double play. The Sox then get 3 in the eighth to put it away.
Pill settled in after a tough first inning for the win and Jay Wisner gets the save. Great defense up the middle for Waltham all series by Spads and Derek Luccini.
Waltham advance to the semi-finals as they have done every year (4 in a row) since coming into the league. |

Waltham Red Sox 2, Malden Storm 1
A classic. Jon Tenney & Mike "Big Game" Barthel locked up in a great, extra inning post season match up.
Barthel went 9.1 IP and Tenney went 8 and each allowed only one run.
The Sox would throw out 2 Storm runners at the plate. One was a questionable attempted double steal with Rob Stephenson at the plate and it would end the inning. The other was a squeeze and Waltham's 1B, Jon Churchill, did his best "Derek Jeter flip" impersonation to Billy Gross at the plate who would tag out Rob Linn.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 10th, Dan Pill would double and Pete Fricker walked to set the stage for Brain Spadafino. Spads singled and Dan Pill would be waved in with Rob Linn blocking the plate. Linn did block Pill but the momentum from the slide would carry his foot over the plate.
Waltham walks off in the bottom of the 10th in what has to be one of the best MSBL games in years. |

Malden Storm 11, N. Andover Thunder 5
Tom Manning started the second game of the double header and Rob Stephenson finished up the final 6 for the win. Mike Johnson went the distance for the Thunder in a gutsy performance in the heat of the afternoon. Close game again going extras with the Storm plating 9 in the top of the 9th and the Thunder putting 3 on the board in the bottom of the inning. The Storm offense was paced by Guckert 5/5, Kruse 4/6, Langston 3/5 with 2 long doubles and Finnegan 3/6. Props to both catchers who caught all 17 innings for their teams. |

Well pitched by Manning and Laurin and well played game on both sides. Malden took a 1 run lead into the 7th when Paul Laurin hit an absolute wind blown bomb into the tree beyond the softball field backstop leading off the top of the 7th. Malden was able to scratch across a run in the bottom of the 8th for the win. |

Waltham Red Sox 13, Malden Storm 3
Derrick Gauvin looked good on this muggy day and gets the win for Waltham going 6 innings and scattering 7 Storm hits allowing 1 run with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
A 2-1 game until the sox plate 7 runs in the seventh to break it open. Waltham had 20 hits with Rich Winant leading the way against his former team going 4-6 with 2 runs scored.
Scary moment in the seventh when the game was still very close with a bang-bang play at the plate with Rob Linn and Dana Levensaler. Linn, who earlier in the game blocked the dish beautifully on Levensaler with the infield in to record a big out, would leave the game with an injury after, basically, the same exact play with Levensaler being safe the second time. Here's hoping Mr. Linn a speedy recovery to a local ball field near you..... |

Slated for 7, ended in the bottom of the time mandated final 10th inning with Jed Webber's 2 out steal of home.
Gutsy pitching performances by both Duke Guthrie and Tom Manning.
Guthrie's 10 innings and 16Ks just edged Manning's 4 hit outing.
Second tight victory in a row for the Cubs that featured *just enough* offense to pull out the win.

Lexington came up big with timely hitting from Derek and Dakota Happas, 2 hits each and Gus Iorbino with a single and a double. A great pitched game from Kevin Curtin and Chuck "Chill-out" Trafton who picked up the save. The Astros made some stellar plays in the field including a great scoop at 1st base by John Richardson in the latter innings keeping it a 1 run game. |
