Towne, behind Scott Hampe's pitching and shortstop Joe McCabe's turning four double plays, put a serious crimp in Cannon's playoff hopes by dropping them 1/2 game behind the Padres in Cannon's final game. Towne had a two-out RBi single from Wayne Duggan in the first and a two-out RBI triple from Pete Pasciucco in the fifth and also scored twice in the second when Brendan O'Connor issued five base on balls. Hampe threw shutout ball for 6 2/3 but Cannon made one final push with two out, nobody on as Jay Kiley, Pat Moore (RBI single) and Tony Iacopucci (RBI single) all reached after having two strikes on them.

Matt Shanahan and Ivan Clemente hit home runs, and the roof, walls and floor caved in with two-out in the 7th as Cannon put the game far out of reach.

Towne posted a seventh-inning come from behind to enable Dave Williams to post his third win against no defeats. A cheap broken bat bloop by McCabe tied the game and a squeeze by Molinari gave Towne the lead back. Kiley went 2 for 2 for Cannon.

Clemente got Cannon started in the 5th with a double and was driven in by Iacopucci's single. In the 8th, Carter hit a two out double and was knocked in by Baccari's single up the middle to win the game.
