The Bay State Pirates finally got back out on the field after a long pandemic induced hiatus and took an Opening Day victory against the Boston Dodgers in Winthrop.
The Pirates struck early in their inaugural MSBL season plating 3 runs in the top of the first. Veterans Brian Benulis and Nate Fishman led the top of the lineup with 5 combined hits including 3 doubles. However, Pirates rookie Andrew Getchell managed to outshine both of them, going 2 for 3 with a walk, 3 RBIS which included a mammoth 2 run homer to left field to make the game 5-0 in the fifth.
Aseltine, making his 14th consecutive opening day start for the Pirates, was in cruise control for most of the game. He gave up 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 9. He surrendered 2 unearned runs in the 7th when the Dodgers started the inning with 2 well-struck hits. Two consecutive 2-out Pirates' blunders allowed 2 runs to score but he was able to escape the threat with a groundo |
