Towne, behind Scott Hampe's pitching and shortstop Joe McCabe's turning four double plays, put a serious crimp in Cannon's playoff hopes by dropping them 1/2 game behind the Padres in Cannon's final game. Towne had a two-out RBi single from Wayne Duggan in the first and a two-out RBI triple from Pete Pasciucco in the fifth and also scored twice in the second when Brendan O'Connor issued five base on balls. Hampe threw shutout ball for 6 2/3 but Cannon made one final push with two out, nobody on as Jay Kiley, Pat Moore (RBI single) and Tony Iacopucci (RBI single) all reached after having two strikes on them.
